Follow Our Progress

October 28th 2003

Well, today we went a little crazy...  Becky received an unexpected check in the mail for a couple hundred dollars.  We did some talking about what we should do next on the bus and came up with a somewhat crazy plan.

With the weather report this morning calling for temperatures in the low 30's to the high 20's, we came up with the idea to put a small wood burning stove in the bus.

We had been kicking around the idea of putting a stove in the bus from the beginning, but kept tossing the idea out because of the risks of fire and smoke, etc.  We still plan to use our propane forced air heater as our primary heat source.  Becky and I just love the idea of being able to have a fire from time to time...

Today we decided to go ahead and find a way to make it work.  When we brought it into the bus it became apparent right away that we were going to have to make some serious design changes if we wanted to fit this thing in there.  We need to have a minimum 18" clearance all the way around the stove and from the section of pipe that is singe wall.

The little stove cost us about $140.00 for the stove and a short section of single wall pipe.

The rest of the pipe will be insulated (more expensive than the stove I found out).  The insulated pipe has a minimum clearance of 2" and can be passed through the roof without any problem.  We'll have to wait until I can afford to buy the insulated pipe and cap before we can use the stove inside the bus.

We burned a bunch of scraps of wood that were lying around to burn off the paint fume smell and test it out.  It's so cute...

The idea that we came up with today is to put the stove up on a platform over the wheel well.  I threw together a quick picture of what it might look like there...

The couch/bed that was going to be located in the spot where the stove is going will move to the other side of the bus.  The computer desk/entertainment center will move to the side of the refrigerator (in front of the wood burning stove)

I think that we will end up covering over the window so I can put up some fire resistant paneling along the wall.

Depending on how it all looks, we might put up some tile on the platform and part of the wall to add a bit more safety and make it look cute...

I think that the little stove will make a really nice addition to the bus.
