June 7, 2006

My friend Tedd loaned me his trailer to go and pick up some pallets from the local pallet recycling company.

I managed to get about 20 pallets back to the house and promptly went to work pulling them apart for the wood.

I purposefully picked the oldest looking ones they had.  There was no charge for the pallets.

It took a little work to get the pallets torn apart and all of the nails pulled out.  They use the twisted flooring nails to put the pallets together, so they are not easy to remove.

Once I had the nails out, I went to work nailing the boards to the wall panels that I had built earlier.

The pallet boards are some kind of hard wood and VERY heavy.  I didn't realize that the boards would be so strong...  I over built my panels, but I think they will last for many years.

It takes about 2 pallets worth of wood to cover one side of a wall panel.  My layout calls for some of the panels to have both sides covered with pallet boards, so there's a lot of work ahead for me.

It took me about 2 hours to create 2 panels and that does not include the time it took to put the panel frames together.  My guess is that it will take about an hour and a half for me to complete each panel assembly from start to finish.

I think the panels look great.  The black fabric will keep light from getting to areas where I don't want it. Right now I am concentrating on making plain panels to fill in areas where there are no props.  Later I will build my props into boxes faced with the same board pattern.  The prop boxes will blend in with the rest of the panels and make for a great scare...
